What Is DOSH Medical Surveillance?

Medical surveillance is a systematic health monitoring programme required under DOSH regulations for employees exposed to hazardous chemicals or occupational health risks. The purpose is to detect early signs of work-related illness, assess fitness for continued exposure, and ensure employers comply with Malaysian occupational health legislation. Medical surveillance may include physical examinations, biological monitoring, laboratory investigations and ongoing health assessments depending on the employee’s exposure and the recommendations in the Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA).

Who Needs Medical Surveillance?

Medical surveillance is required for employees whose Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA) recommends health monitoring due to exposure to hazardous chemicals. This commonly applies to employees working in manufacturing, laboratories, chemical processing, automotive industries, oil and gas, printing, electronics, agriculture and other industries where workplace chemical exposure exists.

What Does a Medical Surveillance Programme Include?

  • Physical Examination — Comprehensive clinical assessment
  • Medical Investigations — Targeted tests based on chemical exposure
  • Biological Monitoring — Where applicable based on CHRA recommendations
  • Biological Effect Monitoring — To detect early health effects from exposure

Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Surveillance

1. Is medical surveillance mandatory under DOSH?

Yes. Medical surveillance may be required under the Occupational Safety and Health (Use and Standards of Exposure of Chemicals Hazardous to Health) Regulations 2000 (USECHH Regulations 2000) when a Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA) recommends health monitoring for employees exposed to chemicals hazardous to health. Employers are responsible for ensuring eligible employees undergo medical surveillance by an Occupational Health Doctor (OHD) where required.

2. How long does medical surveillance take, and when will the report be ready?

Most medical surveillance examinations are completed within 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the required assessments. Reports are generally prepared within ten to fourteen working days after all investigations and laboratory results are available.

3. Can Wawasan KVL conduct medical surveillance at our workplace?

Yes. Wawasan KVL Occuhealth provides both clinic-based and on-site medical surveillance services for companies in Shah Alam, Selangor and throughout Malaysia. On-site examinations can minimise employee downtime while ensuring compliance with DOSH requirements.
